When I was invited to take part in Welcome to My World, an exhibit of altered globes at 23 Sandy Gallery, I knew right away I wanted to remake the interior of a globe, rather than just its surface.

That’s a simple idea, but it’s unnerving to cut into a model of the Earth, not being quite sure how it’s made or how you will put it back together. I cut the hemispheres apart at the equator, and repapered the interior with triangular gores cut from a 1959 Encyclopedia Britannica. A flashlight mounted on the metal meridian provides illumination through a series of portholes above the Antarctic Circle.
